1925: Tilak's idiosyncratic view of Vedic chronology

Tilak, Bal Gangadhar Vedic chronology and Vedanga Jyotisha (containing also Chaldean and Indian Vedas and other miscellaneous essays) Poona City Messrs. R.B. & S.B. Tilak 1925
First edition pp.[4], 174, [2], 2 plates, folding table. A very good copy bound in contemporary two-tone cloth, spine label. Light spotting to title pages.

A collection of the writings of the Indian nationalist, writer and social reformer Lokamanya Tilak relating to his theory of the Arctic being the original home of the Aryans, the creators of the Vedas. Astrological/astronomical texts such as the Vedānga-jyotisha were correlated with the evidence found in the Vedic hymns themselves to push their date of composition back as early as 4500 BC. This collection includes extracts from a "rough note-book" kept in Mandalay jail during Tilak's imprisonment for sedition from 1908 to 1914.
