The author, a former US Congressman best known as "The Father of Arizona", made an official visit to India, China and Japan to study irrigation practices. He took a particular interest in Sun Worshippers or Zoroastrians and the first half of this book he describes Parsee life and religion. The second part, subtitled Stray Letters from Asia, contains his letters from Japan, China and India dating from September 1868 to March 1869.
