Abdullah Munshi's autobiography

[Abdullah bin Abdulkadir]; Thomson, J.T., editor Translations from the Hakayit Abdulla (Bin Abdulkadar), Munshi. With comments by J.T. Thomson. London Henry S. King & Co. 1874
First edition, 8vo, pp.x, 349, [1], frontispiece. A good copy in original cloth, partly un-opened, extremities worn, hinges cracked. Short repaired tear to title.

An annotated English translation of Abdullah's autobiography, written in Malay in the 1840s. Abdullah was Thomson's munshi, or language teacher, during his stay in Singapore, 1838-53. Malay autobiographies of this period are unusual. This is one of only two translated into English in the nineteenth century, the other being Marsden's Memoirs of a Malayan Family [see no. 28 in this catalogue].
