William and Andson Cowie were important figures in the history of Borneo. William traded around the northern coasts and to Sulu, and was involved with Baron Overbeck in the formation of the North Borneo Company, becoming its Managing Director and Chairman before his death in 1911. Andson spent thirteen years at Sulu from 1875 to 1888, when he returned to his native Scotland and died, aged thirty-two. Before the Chartered Company was established the brothers operated the coal mine at Brooketon; they later sold it to Charles Brooke. The full text of the Treaty of 1847 between the Sultan of Borneo (i.e. Brunei) and Great Britain is included in both Malay and English (pp.273-288). This book was probably presented to Sir Hugh Charles Clifford GCMG GBE (1866-1941) during his term as Governor of North Borneo, 1901-2.
