Pantun Melayu. English version by A.W. Hamilton. Illustrated by W.G. Stirling. Singapore Printers Ltd. 1932
First edition, pp.33, 5 plates. A very good copy in original boards.
A scarce publication illustrated by William George Stirling (1887–1951) who went to Malaya in 1907 at the age of 19 to work on a rubber plantation. He joined the civil service in 1909, first in the customs department, from 1915-20 with the Chinese Protectorate in Malacca, and from 1921-31 as Assistant Protector of Chinese in Singapore. Arthur Wedderburn Hamilton (1887-1967) served in the Malay police from 1907, and took part in the 1915 campaign against Tok Janggut's uprising in Kelantan. He was fluent in Malay. The frontispiece, irrelevant to the text, shows a Balinese girl in typical pose of the period. The other illustrations show Malays.
