William Anderson (1842-1900), Scottish surgeon, was Professor of Anatomy and Surgery at the Imperial Naval Medical College in Tokyo from 1873 to 1880. While there he collected more than 2000 Japanese and Chinese paintings which he sold to the British Museum on his return in 1881. He also donated his extensive collection of Japanese illustrated wood-block books.
