Superb plates of Ajanta

First edition. Three portfolios, atlas folio, containing 163 plates in total, 51 in colour, with the three corresponding text volumes, 4to, pp.xix, 55, folding map; vii, 70, 8 plates, text illustrations; viii, 100, 9 plates. Volume four is NOT present. The original cloth portfolios and their contents are in very good condition. The text volumes are in original cloth with gilt titles on spines and boards, and original dust-jackets. The second and third volumes are slightly warped, the dust-jacket of volume one is chipped and stained, there are remnants of a label on second volume's dust-jacket. Internal hinges of all three volumes are cracked, but firm. Contents are clean and in very good condition.

The Archaeological Department of the Government of the Nizam of Hyderabad restored the Ajanta paintings in the 1920's, and commissioned E.L. Vassey to photograph them. His photographs form the basis of this monumental production with it's 163 superb plates. The fourth volume, published in 1955, is not present here.
