Rounsevelle Wildman (1864-1901) was Special Commissioner of the United States for the Straits Settlements and Siam, and later, American Consul General in Hong Kong. He took charge of the Johor bungalow at the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago, at the request of Sultan Abu Bakar. From 1894 to 1897 he owned, edited and regularly contributed to the Overland Monthly, a magazine founded by Bret Harte in 1868. He dedicated this book: "To my wife,...in remembrance of those three glorious years in the Golden Chersonese, our Honeymoon". Tragically both perished with their two children, when their steamer from Hong Kong sank in fog in San Francisco Bay.
