Joseph Hammer, later known as Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall, 1774-1856, entered the Austrian diplomatic service at the age of 22, and was appointed to Constantinople three years later. He returned to Vienna in 1807, and published numerous Arabic, Persian and Turkish texts.
