Wilkinson, R.J. A Malay - English Dictionary. Part I: (Alif to Za). Part II: (Sin to Nya). Arranged according to the Jawi alphabet. Index. Singapore Kelly & Walsh. 1903
First edition, three parts bound in one, 4to, pp.ii, ix, 355, (357)-700, (4), (705)-717, liv, [2], v. Contemporary half calf, neatly re-backed, preserving original spine. A very good copy.

The complete first edition as issued in January 1903, with appendices, index, addenda and corrigenda, and the 1903 title page and preface. A monumental work, and still the most useful dictionary for Jawi Malay. Wilkinson served in the Malayan Civil Service from 1889 and spent much of his spare time collecting words and testing meanings with local informants. After this dictionary was published in parts between 1901 and 1903 he continued his researches till he left Malaya in 1915. He was the first to supersede Marsden's Dictionary, and with this work "Malay and English lexicography had been brought almost to its peak" - Russell Jones in his introduction to the reprint of Marsdens Dictionary and Grammar. This peak he attained with his later Rumi dictionary in 1932.
