An octavo digest of the folio edition of parliamentary papers on the opium trade and the events leading up to the First Opium War, covering the period from 31 December 1833 to 5 November 1839. The preface remarks that the 'bulky volume... is out of print', such was the degree of public interest, and 'the subject is in itself so curious, so interesting, so strange in its details, and is in some parts so exciting as a narrative of political struggles, and dangerous adventures, that the merest novel reader would scarcely find the correspondence tedious.'
