Although he set out on a hunting trip, an enforced stay in an area never previously visited by an Englishman gave Cobbold the opportunity for a more extensive study of the social and political conditions of the people of the Pamir region. Appendices are on the commercial and mineral wealth of the region, and on treaties respecting the Anglo-Russian frontier.
