The scarce memoirs of the long time Singapore trader, and friend of James Brooke. The writer devotes a chapter to his friend the Rajah, and another to Sir Henry Keppel. Others are on Johore, Perak, Pahang and Siam. First Steps begins "I cannot say that Singapore, in my early days, was an amusing place...". There is a piece on the Singapore Water Works and another on the Sailor's Home. Read was the founding Chairman of the Singapore Club in 1861.
