"Those who lived in the Malay Archipelago between 1840 and 1860, will readily recall most of the incidents related in this book, as they were well known, and are not the imaginings of a romantic fancy", states Spenser St. John, ostensibly the editor of this romanticised biography of Captain Hunter covering his exploits in the Malay archipelago. According to Graham Irwin in Nineteenth Century Borneo, he was in fact the author.
