Lattimore, an outstanding authority on Mongolia and Inner Asia, travelled from Peking to Kashmir in 1926-27 along the caravan route known as "the Winding Road". In this record of his journey he comments on the economic, political, and cultural dimensions of what he saw as well as providing an historical background and comparison with earlier travellers. A detailed itinerary of the journey can be found at the end of the book.
