The Rev. Samuel Lambrick established a mission at Cotta, six miles south-east of Colombo, in 1822, and acquired a printing press intended for Kandy in the same year. He published the first part of his Grammar of Sinhalese in 1825, and the first edition of this Vocabulary in the same year.
