Sir Herbert Mullaly, 1860-1932, joined the Royal Engineers in 1878 and served on the Lushai expedition, 1889-90 before being appointed Assistant Secretary to the Military Department, India, in 1895. In this work, published anonymously, he gives "a clear historical account of Russia's March through Central Asia in all its stages".
