George English, an American soldier of fortune and Turcophile, took holy orders, served in the US navy, travelled to Constantinople, and converted to Islam taking the name Mohammed Effendi. He was appointed general of artillery on this expedition through Salt's influence. The English edition published a year earlier did not have the map.
