1734: 18th century study of Manicheism

First edition, two volumes, 4to, pp.[iv], lxxvi, 594; viii, xxxiv, 806 and final blank leaf. Volume 1 with title printed in red and black with engraved vignette, and 2 engraved headpieces by B. Picart. A superb set bound in contemporary calf, triple fillet round covers, spines gilt in compartments with maroon and brown lettering pieces. Minor repair to heads of spines. Light marginal waterstain on a few leaves in second volume.

A study based on the writings of the prophet Mani, originally written in Syriac Aramaic. 'Ouvrage tres-estime' (Brunet). This copy with a pamphlet 'Le Grand Beausobre et ses amis ou la Societe francaise a Berlin entre 1685 et 1740' by Chiristian Bartholmess, published in Paris in 1854, loosely inserted.
